Frequently Asked Questions
How does File Drop work?
File Drop discovers other devices on your local network automatically. Open the tool on two or more devices connected to the same Wi-Fi, and they'll appear on each other's screen within seconds. Click a device to send files or messages directly, peer-to-peer.
Do my files pass through a server?
No. Files and messages are transferred directly between devices using WebRTC peer-to-peer connections. Our server only helps devices discover each other. Your actual data never touches our servers.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no hard limit, but the receiving device holds the file in browser memory until you save it, so very large files can exhaust a phone's memory. Files up to a few hundred MB are comfortable on mobile; on a desktop you can go well beyond that. Save the file as soon as it arrives to free the memory.
What is a pairing code?
If two devices don't appear to each other automatically, create a pairing code on one device and enter it on the other (or open the copied link there). The code puts both devices in the same room regardless of how your network hands out addresses, which is the reliable way to pair across mobile data, VPNs, or IPv6 networks.
What file types are supported?
Any file type works: images, videos, documents, archives, code, and more. There are no restrictions on file format.
Can I send to multiple devices?
Yes. If multiple devices are on the same network, they all appear in the discovery view. Select any device to send files or messages to it individually.
Why don't I see the other device?
Automatic discovery relies on both devices looking like they share a network, which doesn't always hold on VPNs, mobile data, or some IPv6 setups. Use a pairing code to connect them directly. Guest and corporate Wi-Fi can also block device-to-device traffic entirely. Keep the tab in the foreground during a transfer, since background tabs get throttled.
Does it work between different operating systems?
Yes. File Drop works in any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. No app installation needed.
Is File Drop free?
Completely free with no signup, no ads, and no limits. It's a privacy-first tool that runs entirely in your browser.
